Reviving our coffee heritage, restoring our forests, and growing sustainable livelihoods.
The Koro’be Coffee and Tree Plantation Project, under the KC-Koor’be Cooperative Society, aims to revive coffee as one of the Kakuwa community’s traditional cash crops while restoring vegetation and forest cover across the seven mountains in our ancestral land.
The initiative brings together livelihood development and environmental restoration. By supporting coffee cultivation alongside carefully planned tree planting, the project seeks to create income opportunities for community members and protect the natural resources on which future generations will depend.
Reviving Coffee Production
The project proposes to establish coffee plants and trees across more than 25 to 30 hectares of land. Participating farmers will be supported to develop skills in nursery management, planting, crop care, harvesting, and post-harvest handling.
Through the cooperative, farmers will be encouraged to share knowledge, organise production, and explore collective marketing opportunities. Particular attention will be given to involving women and young people in nursery operations, farm management, and other activities along the coffee value chain.
Restoring Our Mountain Landscapes
Restoration activities will prioritise suitable indigenous trees, protection of existing vegetation, and the recovery of degraded areas. Planting plans will distinguish areas suitable for coffee farming from those requiring forest restoration and conservation.
Where conditions are appropriate, shade trees will be integrated with coffee cultivation to support soil protection and more diverse farm habitats. Site assessments will guide the choice of coffee varieties and tree species, taking account of altitude, rainfall, soil conditions, and water availability.
Community participation will be essential to protecting seedlings from fire, uncontrolled grazing, and other threats. Long-term maintenance will be planned alongside planting to improve survival and ensure lasting benefits.
Funding and Implementation
The proposed budget of USD 98,500 will support site assessments, community consultations, nursery establishment, coffee seedlings, tree planting, farmer training, essential tools, and early maintenance.
Implementation will include agreement with landholders and relevant community structures on planting sites, responsibilities, and benefit-sharing. Progress will be tracked through the area planted, seedling survival, farmer participation, and the condition of restored sites. Coffee income will develop over time as plants mature and reliable market connections are established.
Support a Greener, More Prosperous Community
We invite community members, partners, and well-wishers to contribute funding, suitable seedlings, tools, technical expertise, and market connections.
Together, we can revive our coffee-growing heritage, restore our mountain landscapes, and build livelihoods rooted in responsible care for our ancestral land.
