Growing food, strengthening livelihoods, building a self-reliant community.
The Kakuwa Community Farms (KCF) Initiative is a proposed community-led agricultural project covering nine Payams in Yei, Morobo, and Lainya Counties, Central Equatoria, South Sudan. In collaboration with government at all levels, traditional leaders, farmers, and development partners, KCF aims to strengthen food security and support the transition from subsistence farming to productive, market-oriented agriculture.
With a planned budget of USD 870,000 over 24 months, the initiative seeks to cultivate 1,200 acres, reaching approximately 6,000 direct beneficiaries and 27,000 indirect beneficiaries. Particular emphasis will be placed on opportunities for women, youth, returnees, and persons with disabilities.
The project plans to:
- Expand mechanized farming: Introduce three tractors and improved farming practices to increase cultivated land and food production.
- Grow food and income: Produce maize, beans, groundnuts, and cassava for household consumption and local markets, while establishing coffee, cocoa, and tea for longer-term income.
- Reduce harvest losses: Establish three regional warehouses and introduce processing equipment, improved drying, and safer storage.
- Build local skills: Train farmers and create opportunities in machinery operation, maintenance, processing, and agricultural enterprise.
- Strengthen community ownership: Combine traditional leadership with transparent financial management, reserving 40% of leadership roles for women.
Through the proposed Kakuwa Green Fund, the initiative aims to reinvest earnings in future planting seasons, equipment maintenance, farm expansion, and community priorities, including education and health.
KCF’s vision is a food-secure, economically independent community where agriculture provides dignified livelihoods and contributes to lasting peace.
Partner with us to help turn this vision into productive farms and lasting opportunities for the Kakuwa community and its neighbours.
